Work With Marie: Corporate Programs

Research shows that, when managed well, diverse teams outperform homogenous teams. They are more creative, better at solving problems, and are well equipped to meet the complex demands of a dynamically changing business environment. However, when there’s a lack of cross-cultural awareness and understanding, multicultural teams and organizations can experience issues with communication, trust, cooperation, decision-making, fatigue and burnout… eventually affecting the bottom line. Agility in cross-cultural contexts can be the deciding factor for whether those differences promote or hinder innovation and growth. Culturally intelligent leadership can tip the scales in favor of positive, collaborative team performance, resulting in profitability and cost savings.

That’s where Cultural Intelligence (CQ) comes in; the capability to relate and work effectively in culturally diverse situations; national, ethnic, organizational, generational, gender, etc.

I’ve worked with and led multicultural teams for most of my career, consisting of 28+ years in corporate Information Technology, and Coaching/Training since 2008. Having coached hundreds of foreign-born professionals over the years, I’ve come to have great respect and appreciation for the challenges they face acclimating to a new culture. I’ve also come to understand the obstacles that can occur on teams when individuals from different cultural upbringings come together to work and collaborate.

My corporate leadership coaching and training programs, for clients such as Cognizant Technology Solutions, Starwood Hotels & Resorts and others, have had a positive ripple effect throughout those organizations.

My more popular focus areas are listed below. That said, everything I do is customized, and I’ll work with you and your company to create a program that addresses and supports your most urgent needs.

Cultural Agility in Leadership (10-week Group Program)

Are you managing a team of individuals from different countries, diverse cultural backgrounds? Diversity on teams is highly beneficial to creativity, effectiveness, and bringing out the best in each team member. Yet, if you aren’t comfortable with how to work with and lead the different approaches, it can feel like you’re working in a foreign land yourself. The differences can become magnified, the team can feel disjointed and out of sync, resulting in miscommunication, rework, missed deadlines, disgruntled team members, and frustration for everyone.

This 10-week multicultural leadership program is all about giving leaders the skills, know-how and confidence to get the best out of their culturally diverse teams. The program will bring leaders out of their cultural comfort zones, assess and develop their Cultural Intelligence, and build understanding of what’s needed for successful leadership in culturally diverse environments.

As no two businesses are the same, this is also true for each delivery of this program. Understanding the specific needs of your organization is the first step in the engagement. The final program design will include components that address the goals of the organization and the program participants. With that in mind, here are areas often covered in this program:

  • Identify your individual leadership style, cultural values and cultural intelligence
  • Understand your team’s specific cultural makeup; strengths and challenges
  • Learn about cultural dimensions of communication styles and attitudes towards hierarchy, evaluation, persuasion, leadership and decision-making

The Highly Effective Multicultural Team (12-week Team Program)

Are you leading or are you part of a team of individuals from different countries and cultural backgrounds? Research shows that diversity on teams is highly beneficial to creativity, effectiveness and bringing out the best in each team member. Yet, without a communally designed and shared way of relating and communicating, the team can feel disjointed and out of sync. Differences can become magnified and result in unproductive conflict, mistrust, demotivation, and the loss of skilled staff.

Team dynamics are the unconscious, psychological forces that influence the direction of a team’s behavior and performance. They’re created by the nature of the work, the personalities within the team, their cultural backgrounds, their working relationships, and the environment in which the team works.

This 12-week program equips an intact, multicultural team with the skills, know-how and confidence to work effectively together with greater trust, better communication, and reduced stress. Bringing individuals out of their cultural comfort zones, developing their awareness, and enhancing their appreciation for individual differences in a culturally diverse environment are some of the outcomes, leading to a team that thrives together.

A Cultural Values assessment will be used to map out the team’s specific cultural makeup and as a basis for discussions around values, beliefs and assumptions. Using a Team Diagnostic assessment and research-based approach to reveal specific team strengths and challenges, we’ll set a baseline of what’s working and what’s not working. Then focus coaching and training on 14 team competencies, as gauged by the team members themselves.

As no two teams are the same, each delivery of this program is unique as well. Understanding the specific needs of your team is the first step in the engagement. The final program design will include components that address the goals of the team and the individual participants. With that in mind, here are areas often covered in this program:

  • Understand team’s specific cultural makeup; strengths and challenges
  • Learn about cultural dimensions of communication styles and attitudes towards hierarchy, evaluation, persuasion, leadership and decision-making
  • Access, appreciate and leverage cultural differences
  • Understand the impact of unconscious bias on team dynamics
  • Develop strategies and confidence for working with team members from different cultures
  • Create team goals, objectives and development strategies for long term success
  • Gain strategies for effectively running cross-cultural meetings
  • Develop team synergy and cohesion through proven strategies and techniques
  • Self-reflect on individual drivers around work expectations and values
  • Design a strong team alliance with cohesiveness, productivity and fulfillment
